Welcome

Thanks to Christine we are in the process of collecting personal details for a new church directory.
When you reply giving your permission please would you include all the details you wish to appear in this directory. There appears to have been some confusion.

We seem to be moving forward albeit at a slow pace as some have said.
Thanks to various folk volunteering to help with the gardening and grounds tidying we have not had to call upon our paid contractors except for grass cutting. The hedges on both sides of the access road seem to grow quickly and if you would like some exercise in the sunshine you would be most welcome. Just come along whenever suits you and get that extra vitamin D that we are told we need. Cuttings can be placed in the wooded area to the left of the pathway up to the church.

Several member of the A/V team are on holiday over the next few months so please if you are able pop up into the balcony to see if you can help. Learning is a lifelong journey . Renowned figures emphasize that education never ends, encouraging constant curiosity to keep the mind young, adaptable, and engaged.

I have always included the various rotas for groups that help us function as a church. However they can only be as correct as the copies I am given. I realise folk sometimes need to change their duty but if the organisers of these rotas can let me know their most up to date lists around the 20th of the month I can use these details for the following month in the magazine.

Another plea for helpers for the Broomburn Steps. They are such a small group and really need an input of more helpers.
Mike gave out a small survey about gifts recently.. I would say every little thing we do in and around Maxwell is a gift and it benefits everyone.

I will be on holiday for the last 2 weeks of May but the emails are being monitored. Also due to holidays the June magazine will be published in the middle of the month.

Thank you

Denise

Minister's Message for the Month

1.Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2.fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy that was set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3.Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Hebrews 12 NIVUK)

It is a common encouragement among Christians that we, “fix our eyes on Jesus”. That is the encouragement of the author of the letter to the Hebrews here: that we are to journey through life fixing our eyes on Jesus. There are many reasons for doing so, some of which I would reflect on here.

From the passage, we fix our eyes on Jesus to ensure that we do not become distracted by “everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles”. Much like Peter walking on water, when he took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink. We live with a purpose: to follow Christ’s ways, glorifying and sharing Him. We can only do this if we firmly fix our eyes on Jesus, making Him the priority; and recognising other things are potential distractions.

Another reason for fixing our eyes on Jesus is that it helps us approach the difficulties life throws at us. I have recently been revising some of the sermons of Corrie Ten Boom, and this passage from a sermon entitled, “How to forgive” struck me:

And his cross shows us that we can accept suffering as a part of God's plan for this world. When I was in the concentration camp one of the most terrible things I had to go through was that they stripped us of all our clothing and we had to stand naked. The first time was the worst.

I said, “Betsy, I cannot bear this”. And suddenly it was as if I saw Jesus at the cross. And the Bible tells, they took his garments, he hanged there naked. And I knew he hanged there for me, for my sins. And by my suffering I understood a fraction of the suffering of Jesus Christ. And it made me so thankful that I could bear my suffering. “Love so amazing, so divine, demands my life, my soul, my all”. (How to Forgive by Corrie Ten Boom | SermonIndex)

Finally, we fix our eyes on Jesus because He is the best thing around which we can shape our lives. I recently shared a passage from Pete Grieg, one of the founders of the 24/7 Prayer movement, in which he speaks of the vision of that movement being Jesus. I do so again, as a way of articulating how it is we are called to shape our lives around Jesus:

The point of prayer is not the power that it releases, but the person it reveals.

I don’t pray because I’m into prayer: I pray because I’m into Jesus. So, we talk.

I don’t believe in the power of prayer: I believe in the power of Jesus. So, I ask for his help, a lot.

I’m not into evangelism: I’m into Jesus. So, I talk to people about Him.

I’m not into social justice: I’m into Jesus. So, I stand against His enemies.

I’m not into Church: I’m into Jesus. So, I like His people (they’re weird, so am I).

The vision is Jesus: everything else is secondary.

These thoughts only feel like the beginning of our reflections on what it means to fix our eyes on, or make our priority, or have a vision which is, Jesus. I do not know where these thoughts might lead. But I do not this – that to start, we must acknowledge that our focus must be Jesus.

With every blessing,
Stuart

Sharing the Good News Easter Eggs      Easter 1

On the Thursday and Friday before Easter, Mike and I spent an hour on each day giving out an Easter booklet with a Maxwell leaflet inside, accompanied with a creme egg.
Over the two days we gave out 90 booklets and eggs. We were pleasantly surprised by the warm reception we received from those we spoke to, and between us we only had seven people who refused the booklets.
The only reason we stopped was because we ran out of booklets and eggs but that was 90 people who heard about Maxwell Mearns Castle and were given the opportunity read about the real meaning of Easter and Jesus Christ.

Through our experience, we learned that mission need not be difficult and we were well received by people.
How many of the people we encountered will come to church is questionable but that was not the point of the exercise.
Matthew 28 instructs us to Make Disciples of all Nations, not to Make Church Members of all Nations.
Remember, our job is to plant seeds but God is the Lord of the harvest.

I just wanted to share this with you.

17th May - Karen, Lynnette and Graeme
  24th May - Fraser
31st May - Shona and Janette
7th June - Donald and Iain

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped to clear the church steps. Your efforts make the area safer for everyone who uses it – not just our congregation, but the many walkers who pass through by as well.

We are a small team and would really love a few more people to join us ~ many hands make light work! It’s a lovely way to get some fresh air, enjoy a little light gentle exercise, and spend time with others in our community.

If you’re interested in helping, please let me know ~ even if you can only manage once or twice a year, it would be very much appreciated.

Should anyone need to change their date, we can arrange swaps, and we have a fantastic team who are always glad to step in if needed.

The Inspiration Orchestra

Any who have been at the Inspiration Orchestra Festival in Perthshire over the last couple of years will have sensed a real 'feel good' factor surrounding what Ian White has achieved working week by week with disabled people in the Orchestra.

To be given an opportunity to perform in front of a live audience is naturally what any orchestra would want and it's a real highlight for these disabled members and their families – so, with there being no Festival this Summer, it is great to hear they are planning their first concert in Glasgow, and it would mean so much if you can join them in St Silas church on Friday 15th May ...become the audience and become inspired!

Clothes Recycling BinClothes 1

Just to let you know the clothing and textile recycling bin was emptied on Friday.

The church receives a small amount from this project and the clothes, sheets, blankets, pillowcases etc. are re - used instead of going to landfill.

Pairs of shoes even if they are well worn, thin towels, torn clothes can all be used as long as they are clean.

Thank you for your continued support .

Knit and NatterKnit and Natter 2

The knit and natter group continues to be well attended with several ladies who have not knitted for years taking up their needles again.
The stock of scarves, gloves and hats that go into the Christmas boxes for Blythswood have benefitted from this venture.
We are always short of hats, gloves and scarves for adults and scarves for all ages. Obviously we are limited by the size of the shoeboxes but the ladies have knitted some wonderful items for us.
Thank you
If you have any spare wool the group can always use it

You may pray aloud or in silence.
"Where two or three gather in my name there am I with them" Matthew 18:20

"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place."

Maxwell Pray Now Group

Pray Now is a WhatsApp group for Maxwell members
pray now
This group sends out occasional requests for prayer. In particular those which might be regarding things more acute or immediate. At present there are 18 of us who, when we receive a request for prayer, stop what we are doing and pray for whatever has been asked.

Are you on the Pray Now WhatsApp Group? If you want to be added to the group to receive prayer news then simply ask Denise and she will add your number to the list.

If you have a matter that you would like to be prayed about in this way, you can contact Denise and she will organise for news to be sent out.
